NFPA 25 ITM Quick Reference Guide

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) refers to its standards as living documents, continuously adding new ways to keep people safe in an ever-evolving world. Innovation in fire safety technology is constant, and the most significant changes to the 2020 edition of NFPA 25: Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems are new requirements aimed at ensuring technologies function as intended.

What is the Scope of NFPA 25

•Establishes MINIMUM requirements for ITM at set frequencies.

•Applies to only properly installed system in accordance with generally accepted practice.

•NFPA25 is not intended to address installation deficiencies

•Requires ITM of all water based fire protection systems regardless of quality of the design and installation.

•NFPA25 does not require any system modifications to bring an old system upto present standards

•Not a design Evaluation

•Wear and Tear Driven

•MOC (Management of Change- Occupancy) is Owner Driven

What is the INSPECTION..?

•A visual examination of a system or portion thereof to verify that it appears to be in operating condition and is free of physical damage.

What is the Testing..?

•A procedure used to determine the operational status of a component or system by conducting periodic physical checks, such as water flowtests, fire pump tests, alarm tests, and trip tests of dry pipe, deluge, or pre-action valves.

•These tests follow up on the original acceptance test at intervals specified in the appropriate chapter of this standard.

What is the Maintenance..?

•In water-based fire protection systems, work performed to keep equipment operable

•Does not include repair activities.

Purpose of NFPA 25

• Ensuring Operational Status of System is maintained by,
